Like all laminate floor installations, there is an optimum place to start the fitting.  Many DIY enthusiasts make the wrong decision to fit some long rows to get a feeling for how the wood clips together which leave the complicated boards around the door frame to be cut, slide into position under the door frame and finally attached to a static floor.  The place to start say 90% of laminate floor installations is at a door frame.  For this project, it was the door between the entrance hall and the louge.

Each of the floor areas had different sub-floors so a variety of underlays were used.  The entrance hall was a concrete floor with old vinyl tiles which were firmly glued in place, so 3mm thick combined damp-proof-membrane was used. The lounge floor is floor boards at a slightly lower level than the entrance so 5mm firming boards (non woven compressed fibreboard) were used.  In the kitchen, ceramic floor tiles had been removed leaving a level but slightly ridged layer of tile adhesive on a concrete floor, so a damp-proof-membrane with foam was used below the 5mm firming boards.  These underlays were level throughout the project.  Note that 7mm firming boards are also available.

Having the same floor fitted throughout a level always has a optical effect of making the place look larger.  Just one of the benefits of laminate flooring.
